Taking
the emphasis off of the art career and finding art as a lifestyle has been an
awakening experience for me. As I began to explore different art mediums, I
learned to appreciate my individuality. Rather than relying on a conceptually predetermined result, it is
the unpredictable results I most like to see in my work. As if the art is
showing me the way. I find this in pit-firing my clay sculptures and also
through a style of brush work on fabric painted with such immediacy that brush strokes
are not consciously executed. When I can create without over thinking — the art speaks to me in
a way that I feel gives it a voice of its own. When my art ceases to speak to
me, I know I am not challenging myself enough. Keeping my art at a stimulating pace
for me, yet thoroughly exploring the opportunities of each phase or medium is the balance which I hope to achieve.
